Editorial Review
Perennial Dusk -Kinsenka- sits in the story-driven supernatural drama corner of the adventure category, where emotional themes matter more than mechanics. Many works in this space lean on a single gimmick or a parade of interchangeable archetypes. This one is built around a thesis, stated in its opening line: the heart is made of pain.
The setup follows through on that idea. Protagonist Tachibana Sai cannot feel emotional pain, and a mirrored character in the cast cannot feel physical pain, which suggests the writing is deliberately exploring both sides of the theme. His first encounter with Benio Matsuri, a silent girl described as doll-like, is framed as the moment he finally feels that pain, which the synopsis equates with love. The setting is equally distinctive: Mumei-sō, an old apartment in the twilight boundary where the living and the dead cross paths, with its residents fighting entities called “curses.” The cast list is a strength. It runs from a lonely girl to a self-proclaimed strongest woman who smashes everything in her path, and the contrasts promise lively shared-household dynamics beneath the heavier material. Voice acting and music are both listed, which matters for a work so reliant on atmosphere, and the Japanese, English, and Simplified Chinese language support is uncommon at this level of accessibility.
The tags are sparse, so expect the narrative to carry the experience rather than any specific fetish appeal.
This is best suited to readers who enjoy melancholic, lyrical, character-focused fantasy and want an ensemble cast with a clear thematic spine.
Verdict: a poetic, pain-centered supernatural drama for readers who want their stories to ache as much as they enchant.
