Editorial Review
Alice Escaped! sits at the more ambitious end of the doujin action space, a 2D exploration platformer with branching narrative rather than the thin gallery-with-gameplay structure common in adult-adjacent action releases. Indie action titles in this scene often lean on a single mechanic, so a combat system built around combo depth and a multi-ending story stands out.
The standout feature is the tag-team system. Usada swings a large hammer in close quarters, while Kotora covers range with a submachine gun and bombs. Switching between them doubles as an action cancel, which suggests a combat loop built around fluid chaining rather than button mashing. Combos raise attack power, kills fill a chance gauge for special moves, and boss duels revolve around depleting a shield gauge to open a break window. The Alice in Wonderland framing gives the story its hook: the Cheshire Cat, Mad Hatter, and Humpty Dumpty are presented with the question of whether they are truly enemies, and a White Rabbit guide with a zipper on its back hints at something unsettling beneath the cheerful premise. The setup of two schoolgirls pulled into a book while finishing summer homework is light, but the promise of repeated loops, numerous choices, and revealed motives points toward a layered structure. The music tag and four-language support (Japanese, English, Simplified and Traditional Chinese) show a polish and reach that many doujin releases lack.
Players who enjoy stylish, combo-driven 2D action and like uncovering a story across multiple playthroughs will get the most from it, especially if they are fond of twisted Wonderland reinterpretations.
A tightly designed action platformer with a mystery worth replaying for, and easily one of the more accessible picks in its category.
