Synopsis
I met my wife Kanai in a university circle. I was drawn to her easygoing nature, approachability, and thoughtfulness, which led us to marriage. However, shortly after our wedding, my mother was diagnosed with terminal cancer. My father quit his job to care for her full-time, spending their remaining moments together. A year after hospitalization, she passed away.
After my mother’s death, my father fell into a deep depression, seemingly losing his will to live. Feeling sympathetic, we decided to live together. He apologized for the trouble, putting on a brave face in front of us. But according to my wife, when alone, he would often sit collapsed in front of my mother’s memorial photo. I asked my wife to look after him during the day, and she did so without complaint. I was truly grateful.
Then my promotion was decided. My father celebrated with us. It was the first occasion for celebration since my mother’s passing, and he participated joyfully. We all drank together, and for the first time in a while, the atmosphere was bright. Soon my father drank himself unconscious. I felt relieved.
