★Voice Drama 04: “Seeking Paradise in Ruin” (Dark Chise)

Separated from Yōto after “that incident,” Chise has been living in severe emotional instability.

Tonight, alone in the men’s bathroom in the dead of night, she seeks solace once more.

Searching for destructive pleasure to forget her anxiety and loneliness…

    ━━・‥…━━・‥…━━・‥…━━・‥…━━・‥…

“I’ll become your ideal lover. So please, give me just one more chance.”

Those words preceded the appearance of Kawamoto Chise—the emotionally unstable ex-girlfriend Takenouchi Yōto broke up with yesterday—or rather, something else wearing her face.

The one calling herself Kageko is a Shapeshifter. An otherworldly entity that consumes other lifeforms, mimics them, and blends into society from the shadows.

Kageko claims she’s absorbed Chise but keeps her alive within her body. She proposes: “Let me live as your girlfriend for a limited time. If you do, I’ll release Chise safely.”

What begins as a temporary relationship gradually becomes something deeper. Yōto finds himself more compatible with Kageko than he ever was with Chise. Through their time together, his exhausted heart heals, and he rediscovers what it means to love someone.

But inevitably, he must confront an inescapable truth: the woman before him is not human, but something fundamentally alien. And within him lie bittersweet memories that make him who he is—memories he cannot ignore.

    Editorial Review

★3.8 / 5 — henhenta editorial rating (our own assessment, not the DLsite official user score)

Shapeshifter of the Twilight Hour operates in the psychological horror-visual novel space that Liar-soft has built a reputation for—unreliable narration, body horror implications, and the destabilization of intimate relationships through supernatural intrusion. It’s a competent entry in a subgenre that values atmosphere and psychological dread over jump scares, though one tempered by the inclusion of adult content mechanics that complicate its thematic coherence.

The work’s distinctive hook is the shapeshifter premise applied to relationship horror: the uncanny valley of a lover who wears the correct face but proves fundamentally alien, combined with the temporal specificity of “the twilight hour”—that liminal space where identities blur. The synopsis fragments deliberately, cutting mid-sentence in that classic Liar-soft style meant to withhold narrative clarity. What’s striking is the bonus voice drama positioning: rather than simple post-game content, “Seeking Paradise in Ruin” recontextualizes the protagonist Chise’s emotional vulnerability before the shapeshifter’s appearance, suggesting the work is interested in how desperation creates openings for parasitism. The tag combination of psychological horror with supernatural elements avoids both full-blown cosmic dread and domesticated paranormalism—this sits in the unsettling middle distance where the threat is intimate and taxonomically uncertain.

The inclusion of the adult content angle (suggested by the voice drama’s implications) risks diluting the work’s psychological edge if handled without purpose, though it’s possible the developers use such scenes as windows into the characters’ self-deception and need for connection.

This appeals specifically to readers who prioritize narrative unreliability and relationship paranoia over jump-scare horror, and who appreciate when adult content functions thematically rather than as mere pagination. A solid psychological horror visual novel with ambition in its premise and execution quality that justifies attention from the genre’s committed audience.
