    Editorial Review

Touhou Battle Quest 2 positions itself as a straightforward dungeon-crawler RPG that leverages the Touhou Project’s recognizable cast to drive a conventional fantasy narrative. It slots into the well-established niche of fan-made Touhou games that prioritize accessible gameplay over canonical fidelity, competing in a landscape where mechanical simplicity and character familiarity often matter more than narrative originality.

What distinguishes this sequel is its declared implementation of a front-view battle system in RPG Maker MV—a technical choice the developer emphasizes as signature to their circle and notably absent from previous MV titles in their portfolio. The magic stone system introducing equipment-based skill acquisition represents a mild mechanical twist, though such resource-gating of abilities is now standard practice across indie RPGs. The addition of new early-game equipment for Easy Mode signals developer responsiveness to accessibility feedback, a thoughtful inclusion that broadens the potential playerbase beyond hardcore dungeon-crawlers.

The narrative setup—a post-victory exploration that stumbles into inter-religious conflict while resurrecting a supposedly defeated antagonist—reads as workmanlike plotting. There’s no indication the story subverts its premise, though the developers’ willingness to diverge from Touhou canon (explicitly noted in the synopsis) at least suggests creative ownership rather than slavish adaptation.

Unified character sprites per job class is presented matter-of-factly, which likely reflects budget constraints rather than artistic vision, though it does reduce visual clutter during combat.

This is fundamentally for Touhou enthusiasts seeking low-friction turn-based gameplay in familiar territory, not for players seeking mechanical innovation or narrative depth. If you’ve cleared the first Battle Quest and want more of the same with marginal systems refinement and a new continent to traverse, this delivers exactly that straightforward proposition.
