Synopsis

【Prologue】

Over thirty years have passed since the end of the Edo period, which lasted two hundred and fifty years.

The age of swords and samurai is now ancient history. Japan, in its fervor to catch up with and surpass Western powers, has entered the Meiji period—an era of sweeping transformation.

“Land Redistribution,” “Prefectural Reorganization,” “Four-Class Equality,” “Enrich the Nation, Strengthen the Military,” “Industrial Promotion”…

Wave after wave of reforms stemming from the Restoration. Guided by reverence for the Emperor and the Meiji Constitution, the Japanese people were united under a modernizing government.

Yet amid this turbulent age, much was being lost and destroyed—casualties of progress.

【Opening Summary】

YoshinoSeiji, a former soldier from the Sino-Japanese War, receives an unexpected invitation from his mentor Nanajō Iwao to the Imperial Hotel.

There he meets Oribe Kurō, a regional official who proposes a mission: deep in a remote county lies a mountain long forbidden to outsiders, and hidden within it, a secret village.

Oribe asks Seiji to venture to this village and persuade its inhabitants to accept Meiji governance—peacefully and swiftly. Few know of the village’s existence, and locals fear the mountain, speaking of demons and mountain witches.

Hesitant at first, Seiji accepts his mentor’s encouragement and takes a train toward Hino County, where his journey begins…
