Editorial Review
A faithful Mega Man X homage wrapped in Azur Lane IP, Rodney and Experimental Facility X3 delivers genuine 2D action credibility in a space where most fan games settle for novelty. This is a gamepad-first platformer with stage variety and boss difficulty designed to test mechanical competency, not IP familiarity—a rarity among doujin action titles that lean heavily on character appeal over game design.
The style-change mechanic signals the creator’s understanding of what made X’s upgradeable arsenal sing: strategic weapon swaps that reshape how you approach enemy patterns. The dual-protagonist system—pairing Rodney with a hapless commander in battle suit—introduces asymmetrical loadout variety without derailing the core action loop. This structural choice prevents the novelty from exhausting itself across multiple stages. The production framing is sharp: a multi-faction assault on a Siren installation provides legitimate scaffolding for escalating difficulty and encountering distinct enemy types tied to thematic coherence rather than arbitrary padding.
Character writing leans into self-aware fanservice territory. The commander’s perpetual incompetence and Rodney’s sisterly dynamic with Nelson ground the narrative premise in personality rather than plot mechanics, which works well enough as motivation between action segments. The Japanese source material is treated with respect rather than parody, anchoring the IP appropriation in genuine fan appreciation.
This targets players who want their doujin action games mechanically serious and their Azur Lane fan content unironic about both the IP and the game design it’s channeling. Casual genre fans should expect a genuine skill check; button-mashing won’t clear the Siren facility.
A legitimately competent action game that respects both its mechanical blueprint and its source material—increasingly uncommon in this space.
