Shinji Asakura has a problem: “I can’t sleep.”

No matter how late it gets, sleep won’t come. He lies in bed with his eyes closed, but remains awake. Instead, he finds himself dozing off during school, and spends his days in a daze. One night, on a whim, he ventures out into the quiet city—only to run into his homeroom teacher, Umi Hagino.

“That’s no good! You shouldn’t be out at this hour! Go home and get proper sleep!”

Worried for him, Umi listens as Shinji confesses his insomnia.

“If you just satisfy yourself during the day, you’ll sleep soundly at night,” she suggests.

But Shinji doesn’t know how to do that. Besides, he’s too out of it during daylight hours to accomplish anything—the only time he has energy is at night.

As a teacher, Umi can’t approve of his nighttime wandering. Expecting nothing, Shinji ventures out again. There he encounters someone in unfamiliar clothes, pretending to be a stranger.
