Synopsis
Saru-kichi, a delinquent protagonist attending an all-boys school, must disguise himself as a girl named Julia and transfer to an elite all-girls academy to save his dying alma mater from closure!
The prestigious “Garasu no Miya Girls’ Academy” stands in a neighboring town. When Saru-kichi discovers that co-education is his school’s only path to survival, he receives help from Tsukishima Karasu, a noble young lady, and sets out alone to transform the boys’ image and protect the memories he shared with his friends.
But can Saru-kichi, who knows nothing about girls, truly understand them through his interactions with these sheltered young ladies? And can these sheltered girls, unfamiliar with boys, come to understand them through Saru-kichi?
As Saru-kichi leverages his delinquent strengths to solve the girls’ problems one by one, the young ladies gradually develop romantic feelings for him. Meanwhile, the boys back home grow increasingly flustered as Saru-kichi becomes more and more refined!
A chaotic romantic comedy set in an elite girls’ academy, aiming for mutual understanding between boys and girls! [Version 1.01 applied]
Editorial Review
Cross-dressing romantic comedies occupy a peculiar sweet spot in the visual novel space—they require genuine comedic timing and character writing to avoid collapsing into either crude farce or uncomfortable ambiguity. Monkeys! positions itself squarely in the romance-comedy hybrid territory, leaning on the fish-out-of-water premise as scaffolding for genuine emotional beats rather than as mere spectacle.
What distinguishes this work is its commitment to the dual-perspective narrative. Rather than treating the protagonist’s infiltration as a one-directional con, the synopsis suggests genuine mutual incomprehension between sheltered girls and delinquent boys—the cross-dressing becomes a vehicle for exploring how different social worlds misread each other. The addition of Tsukishima Karasu as a knowing accomplice elevates the dynamic beyond simple deception, introducing a character who understands both sides and can facilitate actual understanding rather than just romance through secrecy. The school-closure stakes provide practical urgency that justifies why this elaborate scheme exists at all, a detail that separates this from more hollow premise-driven works.
The award-winning designation suggests the execution delivers on comedic pacing and character development—critical for a work this structurally dependent on timing and escalation. The romance elements emerge organically through problem-solving rather than manufactured intimacy, which typically indicates stronger character writing than works that prioritize titillation over narrative coherence.
This works best for readers who appreciate romantic comedy scaffolding built on genuine character confusion and growth rather than ironic distance from the premise. Those seeking character-driven narrative with cross-dressing elements handled as comedic opportunity rather than fetish angle will find the most value here.
A smartly constructed romantic comedy that understands its own premise well enough to mine genuine emotional stakes from obvious comedic setups.
