Synopsis
Naoe Yamato is a second-year student at Kawashima Academy with a close-knit group of friends—four boys and three girls. When two new members join their circle, their days become even more chaotic and fun. Despite having no particular girlfriend, Yamato is content with how things are.
Then fate strikes hard. The powerful Kuki Conglomerate accelerates their “Bushido Plan”—an initiative to create clones of historical figures to solve Japan’s talent shortage. By having students learn alongside these famous personalities, it’s hoped that competitive spirit among regular students will increase and abilities will improve.
Soon, historical figures like Minamoto no Yoshitsune and Kuki Monshiro transfer to Kawashima Academy, making it the center of national attention. Adding to the excitement, an older girl named Matsunaga Tsubame naturally transfers in as well. What all these new arrivals have in common is their mastery of martial arts and their samurai bloodline. Our heroes must keep up with the spirited samurai girls who have joined their ranks. A new story begins in June 2009—now available!

Editorial Review
Majikoi S occupies the crowded intersection of school romance, comedy, and action-driven visual novels, but distinguishes itself through an unusually playful approach to historical pastiche. Rather than treating its premise—cloned historical figures attending modern academy—as dramatic fodder, the game leans into absurdist humor while maintaining genuine romantic stakes, a balance that separates it from more melodrama-heavy competitors in the romance VN space.
The blend of battle system mechanics with visual novel storytelling marks a substantive production choice. Most school romance titles treat combat as window dressing; Majikoi S integrates it as a narrative and mechanical backbone, giving the samurai girl archetype functional weight rather than aesthetic tokenism. The historical clone conceit, while outlandish, provides thematic coherence—characters embody idealized martial traditions alongside contemporary teenage uncertainty, creating friction that drives both comedy and character development. Tags like “love comedy” and “samurai girls” aren’t merely categorical descriptors here; they’re actively synthesized into the game’s DNA rather than sitting separately.
The core friend group dynamic—four boys, three girls, expanding to include legendary figures—suggests the game prioritizes ensemble chemistry over singular protagonist-focused romance tracks. This approach typically appeals to readers fatigued by narrow harem hierarchies and who appreciate dialogue-heavy, relationship-building gameplay over rapid escalation to individual route resolution.
Winning the Moe Game Award’s Silver Prize (2012) signals strong execution in character appeal and presentation, though the accolade reflects taste-specific recognition rather than universal quality. The work succeeds most for players seeking comedy-forward visual novels with genuine romantic and mechanical depth—those who want their samurai girls historical, their school settings chaotic, and their love stories earned through group banter rather than isolated confession scenes.
