Mainetsu Complete Set [Bonus Edition]

Editorial Review

★4.2 / 5 — henhenta editorial rating (our own assessment, not the DLsite official user score)

The Mainetsu series represents a distinctive niche within the visual novel space: the anthropomorphic railroad aesthetic married to traditional galge mechanics. With over 800,000 copies sold, the franchise has clearly resonated with a specific demographic, and this Complete Set with Bonus Edition consolidates that appeal by bundling both mainline titles alongside extensive supplementary material.

What separates Mainetsu from standard school-uniform galge is its thematic commitment to railway culture and rural Japanese settings. The premise—awakening decommissioned locomotives personified as humanoid units in the context of local line closures—creates narrative scaffolding that feels genuinely distinct from typical academy or urban romance frameworks. The e-mote full animation system elevates visual presentation beyond static CGs, though the bonus inclusion of 3,908 high-resolution illustrations (originally hidden by that same animation layer) suggests developer awareness that collectors value comprehensive art assets regardless of in-game visibility.

The sheer scale here is notable: nine megabytes of story text, fifteen routes, 400 CGs, and sixty-nine intimate scenes constitute substantial content depth. The excellent soundtrack tag paired with compelling world-building suggests atmospheric consistency rather than functional accompaniment—crucial for rural settings that demand tonal coherence to avoid feeling hollow.

This edition appeals primarily to completionists and existing franchise devotees seeking both enhanced visuals and narrative closure across multiple routes. The bonus CG collection particularly targets merchandise-adjacent appeal (dakimakura covers, tapestries) that hints at an audience invested in character ownership beyond gameplay.

The Mainetsu Complete Set succeeds as a definitive package for those already convinced by the railway-girl premise. For visual novel players seeking escape through thematic specificity and rural atmosphere rather than broad romantic fantasy, this compilation delivers comprehensiveness that justifies revisiting the series’ expanded scope.
