A dark fantasy world from Nitrokilal (formerly Nitro+ Chiral)—a cursed cat embarks on a journey.
“Hollow”—a mysterious phenomenon threatening all life on earth, from animals to plants. The village of Karou faces severe famine from the devastation of the Hollow, and its inhabitants are reduced to consuming corpses for sustenance. In their desperation, they turn to the unthinkable: sacrificial offerings of living flesh. One cat from the village is chosen as a sacrifice to feed the others.
In this dire village lives Konoe, until one fateful day when his body transforms. Black curse marks appear on his skin, and his ears and tail turn black—an ancient harbinger of doom. With no time to waste, Konoe flees the village for Lanzen, the largest city in Shisa, hoping to find a cure. Braving the dangers of the Hollow, he sets out on his journey.
Editorial Review
Lamento stands as a landmark achievement in the BL visual novel space—specifically, it’s the rare entry that weaponizes dark fantasy worldbuilding not as mere set dressing but as the engine driving both plot and character psychology. Nitro+ Chiral (now operating under the Nitrokilal banner) have constructed a work where the Hollow functions as existential dread made tangible, and the narrative earns its mature themes through consistent thematic development rather than shock value alone.
What distinguishes Lamento is its refusal to separate romance from the story’s central horror. The premise—a village reduced to cannibalism, protagonist cursed with mysterious marks—could collapse into exploitation, but the execution prioritizes character drama and emotional stakes. Konoe’s journey isn’t a power fantasy; it’s a desperate search for identity and belonging within a world geometrically hostile to both. The cat character designs, rendered in the beautiful CGs the tags promise, become visual shorthand for vulnerability and displacement. This isn’t cute; it’s purposeful.
The fantasy setting operates with genuine internal logic. Shisa’s geography, the nature of the Hollow, the social mechanics that force villages toward cannibalism—these elements cohere in ways that elevate what could be straightforward tragedy into something architecturally complex. The character drama tags don’t oversell; encounters with other protagonists (and yes, BL pairings) emerge organically from survival and circumstance rather than convenience.
This work appeals most to readers who want their adult content threaded through substantial narrative architecture—those tired of visual novels that treat story as parenthetical to erotics. Lamento inverts that hierarchy entirely.
A masterclass in deploying dark fantasy to amplify emotional investment rather than obscure it.
