【Story】
When exorcist shrine maiden Yashiro Mamori arrives at a village to answer a request, a mysterious incident occurs—young women vanish with the neighing of a horse. Upon hearing the legend of a headless horse passed down in the village, Mamori suspects a yokai taking the form of this legendary headless horse is behind the disappearances. Determined to rescue the missing women, Mamori heads to the mountain where the horse legend originates.
Editorial Review
Kagura Shinpūki slots into the niche but growing category of 2D action RPGs built around shrine maiden protagonists—a subgenre that’s gained traction as developers recognize the appeal of blending folklore-grounded narratives with combat systems. What distinguishes this chapter-based entry is its explicit commitment to yokai-investigation storytelling paired with actual mechanical depth rather than visual novel framing.
The narrative hook—a headless horse yokai orchestrating disappearances—taps into established Japanese supernatural lore while framing the protagonist, exorcist shrine maiden Yashiro Mamori, as an active investigator rather than a passive story recipient. This positions the work firmly in action-first design philosophy. The combination of 2D sprite-based combat with RPG progression systems and shrine maiden characterization remains comparatively uncommon in the doujin space, where visual novels still dominate the shrine maiden category. The “Chapter of Protection” subtitle signals episodic content delivery, a structural choice that appeals to players seeking serialized progression.
Tag analysis reveals this is fundamentally a game-mechanics experience: the demo availability and Windows 11 compatibility suggest serious technical polish, while the shrine maiden tag serves thematic grounding rather than pure aesthetic appeal. The named character tags (Yamabuki Urara, Yamamoto Kazue) imply a cast of considerable depth for a doujin production.
Target audience: Players who want mechanical engagement layered with yokai mythology and are willing to invest time in chapter-based progression rather than seeking immediate narrative payoff.
This delivers on the promise of marrying folklore investigation with combat systems in ways most doujin shrine maiden works sidestep entirely. For anyone fatigued by static visual novel approaches to supernatural premises, Chapter of Protection offers structural and mechanical substance.
