Synopsis

The Sonoda Zaibatsu—one of Japan’s five major financial conglomerates, built by the Sonoda Group into an elite enterprise. News arrives that Sonoda Eiichiro, the patriarch of this zaibatsu, has fallen into critical condition.

But for me, this is less tragic news than fortunate. With the current patriarch gone, a successor will be needed. In other words, the opportunity has arrived to seize control of the zaibatsu and claim wealth, status, and power.

I am Toudou Akira, a young executive director with considerable influence within the organization. The time has come for me to ascend to the patriarch’s seat.

“There are already movements within the organization to select a successor,” my capable subordinate informs me, having rushed to deliver news of the patriarch’s condition.

I can already see how this will unfold—who will declare candidacy, who will support them, all of it as clear as day. The Sonoda zaibatsu operates on a simple principle: “Talent shall be cultivated and wielded as the organization’s strength.” The powerless fall away, regardless of connections.

I owe the patriarch gratitude for my rapid ascension. But now… I hunger for a new position.
