Editorial Review
Touhou Legend positions itself as a story-driven RPG sequel that leverages RPG Maker MV’s side-view battle capabilities to deliver a more visually polished experience than typical doujin fare. It operates within the crowded space of Touhou fan games, but distinguishes itself through deliberate narrative framing and systematic New Game Plus design rather than fan service alone.
What sets this apart is its commitment to story-first design paired with post-game collection mechanics. The gacha system—crucially tied to in-game currency only—functions as legitimate post-narrative content rather than monetization pressure, allowing players who finish the main campaign to methodically recruit missed characters in subsequent playthroughs. This structure respects player time while maintaining replayability incentives. The parallel universe framing explicitly signals that character personalities diverge from Touhou canon, which either liberates creative storytelling choices or frustrates purists depending on your tolerance for reinterpretation. The side-view battle system with “stunning graphics” suggests a visual upgrade from the first installment, though whether this translates to engaging combat depth or merely competent presentation depends on execution details the synopsis doesn’t fully reveal.
The core narrative hook—reluctant protagonist drawn into world-saving duty through mysterious artifact—trades originality for accessibility, clearly targeting players who want straightforward fantasy progression without experimental narrative structures.
This appeals most to Touhou fans willing to accept substantial character and setting divergence, combined with RPG enthusiasts who prioritize story completion and systematic collection over moment-to-moment mechanical innovation. The all-ages tag ensures broad accessibility, though “story-driven” remains subjective across RPG Maker titles.
A competently assembled fan project that respects player investment through thoughtful post-game structure—worthwhile for series devotees, though unlikely to convert skeptics of Touhou fan adaptations into converts.
