Synopsis

It all started when the recession forced my father’s factory to close. I’d known the business was struggling, but I had no idea things would come to this. Four years into living alone for university in the city, my savings dried up and I was forced to move out of my apartment with over six months left until graduation.

I desperately needed to find a place to live, but affordable housing wasn’t easy to come by. “I can’t find anywhere to live…” I muttered to myself while staring up at the sky.

“Um…?” A voice suddenly called out from behind me. I turned around to see a woman in an apron.

“Are you looking for a room? If you’d like, I could show you one. This building is called Hiyori-so, and I’m the manager here.” She gestured toward the building next to us—an old wooden apartment that looked decades old. Yet somehow, it didn’t feel dirty or neglected. Instead, there was something warm and comforting about it.
