Editorial Review
Poker Face positions itself in the increasingly popular “unlikely office pairing” subgenre of BL manga, specifically the dynamic where contrasting personalities—the outgoing gal versus the reserved, taciturn partner—create romantic tension through their behavioral friction. This setup has become a comfortable mainstay in contemporary doujin, but execution varies wildly depending on whether the work engages meaningfully with character depth or simply uses the contrast as window dressing.
What distinguishes Poker Face is its specific commitment to maturity and self-awareness in the romance itself. The work centers on adults in a workplace setting rather than high schoolers, which immediately elevates the stakes and allows for more nuanced relationship dynamics. The synopsis hints at a refreshingly ambiguous morning-after scenario—the characters wake together without either remembering how they got there—which creates genuine narrative tension around consent and intention rather than relying on manufactured miscommunication. Fujizarashi’s rising reputation suggests polished art direction that likely complements this more sophisticated romantic framework. The tag combination of “Cute” paired with “mature woman” and workplace setting indicates the artist is threading a needle between softness and adult sensibility, avoiding the trap of reducing either character to a type.
The “younger guy pursues older woman” reversal (hinted at in the synopsis’s “pursued by a younger guy”) adds another layer of subversion to standard BL romance hierarchies, particularly when paired with the gal-versus-introvert dynamic that typically skews feminine in mainstream manga.
Readers seeking character-driven romance that respects its adult setting and plays with gender-presentation expectations in unexpected ways will find the most value here. Those looking for straightforward power-dynamic storytelling or high-energy plot escalation may find the quieter interplay frustrating.
A thoughtfully constructed office romance that trusts its character dynamics to carry the emotional weight.
