Synopsis
In the city of Sahō, there exists a legend: whoever obtains all twelve stars known as “Ambitious” can fulfill any ambition.
Tonight, a mysterious phantom thief named Miss Arté makes her appearance in pursuit of these stars. The protagonist Nezu Mikage stumbles upon one of her heists and discovers her true identity—Arise Kaguya, the beautiful and talented girl from his class.
Fearing exposure, Kaguya coerces Mikage into joining her “Phantom Thief Club” to fulfill her ambitions. But before they can properly cooperate, a crisis befalls Mikage’s childhood home—an orphanage. When Miss Arté appears and effortlessly saves it by exposing hidden truths, Mikage finds himself captivated by her elegant and radiant nature.
“A phantom thief isn’t a mere criminal,” Kaguya explains. “We steal hearts and sighs for everyone’s sake.”
Mikage’s heart and admiration are stolen away. Together, the two phantom thieves—Miss Arté and Midnight—join forces, and the curtain rises on a mystery shrouded in Sahō’s night…
Editorial Review
Ambitious Mission lands squarely in the romance-comedy visual novel space where heist fantasy meets high school melodrama—a formula that’s seen recent resurgence but rarely executed with this much structural polish. The phantom thief framing device is inherently appealing to the genre, offering narrative momentum beyond static relationship building, and this work leans into that advantage with genuine mystery beats woven through romantic progression.
What distinguishes this title is its character-driven execution and the specific dynamic between Mikage and Kaguya. The forced partnership angle—coercion morphing into genuine collaboration—creates organic tension that avoids the stagnation plaguing slower visual novels. The “stealing hearts” philosophy reframes the phantom thief archetype as fundamentally idealistic rather than cynical, which reshapes how romance and adventure interact. The orphanage catalyst particularly works as emotional scaffolding; it’s a transparent narrative device, but one that actually motivates Mikage’s admiration rather than leaving him passive. The school setting anchors the fantastical elements without letting them overwhelm the intimate character work.
The Moe Game Awards 2022 User Choice recognition signals strong execution in character appeal and emotional resonance—this isn’t an outlier nomination. The beginner-friendly tag suggests accessibility without sacrificing narrative depth, which is a real strength for visual novels that frequently alienate newcomers with pacing or mechanical complexity.
Ambitious Mission will resonate most with readers who want their romance grounded in shared purpose and mystery rather than pure relationship simulation, and who appreciate when comedic moments genuinely build character rather than interrupting plot. This is a work that understands its own genre conventions well enough to execute them without irony or apology.
Recommended for players seeking character-first visual novels with genuine narrative momentum.
