Synopsis
Shioiri returns to her husband’s family home for Obon season, where it’s her mother-in-law’s first memorial service. Her father-in-law appears tired and lonely, though he tries to show strength. His different masculinity and occasional sadness touch Shioiri’s heart. One day, wanting to cheer him up, she prepares botamochi—his favorite treat. The taste reminds him of his late wife Tomiko’s cooking, and seeing Shioiri overlap with his departed wife’s image, he breaks down and embraces her. Unable to control his emotions, they become intimate. Though it differs from her relationship with her husband, Shioiri senses his enduring love for his late wife. Resolved to limit this to the week of Obon, she surrenders to her father-in-law’s affections despite her conflicted feelings.
