On the Custom of First Night Droit in the Highland Empire

The custom of droit du seigneur was once practiced throughout the continent in ancient times. Before the land was unified into the nations we know today, regional lords governed their territories and people through their own wealth and power. Today, this custom persists solely as a feudal obligation in the empire’s border territories—regions that share a frontier with neighboring nations.

Under this law, when a commoner marries within a lord’s domain, the groom must surrender his bride to the lord for a single night.

Moreover, in present-day Highland, a unique reciprocal custom has been established: in exchange for the bride’s first night, the lord’s favored concubine is sent to the groom for the evening as compensation.
